Red Sox Romance

There's a wonderful discussion of the Red Sox and baseball going on over at, of all places, Making Light. It includes a great explanation of the Red Sox backstory for the uninitiated, a couple of explanations of how baseball is played for the even more uninitiated, and a detailed comment on the physics of baseball. My favorite bit, though, is a description of Schilling holding his foot together with duct tape and staples.

Also, comic book writer and novelist Peter David has a parody of Casey at the Bat on his blog:

Yankees at the Bat

No Schilling in the poem, but don't let that stop you from reading it.

I'm sorry that Houston lost last night, but at least now I can watch the Series without conflict. I think the ex-Toros who were Cardinals are either gone from the team or dead now (Darryl Kile was a Toro). Go Sox!

Well, Schilling's bleeding ankle was being held together by a procedure involving stitching the tendon to something I forgot that was practiced just before it was done on a cadaver to see if it was doable, not duct tape, but yeah, it's an amazing story. I just get tired of hearing how the Red Sox did something no team has ever done before. It should be no BASEBALL team ever won a 7-game series after being down 3-0. Two hockey teams did it. The 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs and my beloved NY Islanders in 1975, early in their existence.

And as a devout Mets fan, I am sooooo glad the Yankees lost. Maybe now Steinbrenner will realize the team needs pitching more than marquee brand hitting stars.

And as a National League fan, I'm rooting for the Cards. :)

The duct tape claim was a tall tale thing, Shelly. It culminated in his foot falling "clean off."

Well, I did know that was a tall tale, but the librarian in me can't resist giving out the actual info.

And now, if you'll excuse me, I have to figure out how much money I want to bet on which team to win. Hubby is in Los Vegas now and I have until just before game time to decide. :) I picked the last two winners so the pressure is on.
